Following his impressive performance in the first Test against South Africa, Bhuvneshwar Kumar jumped eight places to a career-best 22nd, while Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara slipped in the ICC Test rankings for players released on Tuesday (January 9).

Bhuvneshwar picked up six wickets across two South African innings at Newlands, but India failed to capitalise on his gains and eventually lost the first Test by 72 runs.

The Test bowlers rankings also saw Kagiso Rabada, the right-arm seamer, take the No.1 spot on the Test bowlers rankings list with 888 points, one more than James Anderson (887), the England pacer.

Vernon Philander, the medium pacer, took the sixth spot with 806 points after his impressive six-wicket haul in the second innings while picking up three in India’s first dig.

In the rankings for Test batsmen, Steven Smith, the Australia captain, retained the top spot with 947 points, but there was some movement just behind him.

Kohli conceded the second position to Joe Root, his England counterpart, and slipped to third just ahead of Kane Williamson, who is fourth now.

Root earned 26 points from the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney, in which he was dismissed once while scoring 141 runs, but Kohli dropped 13 points after his contributions of five and 28 in Cape Town.

Pujara’s scores of 26 and four resulted in his total falling by 25 points, as he slipped from third to fifth.

Apart from Kohli and Pujara, M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma also lost ground. Vijay was 30th after dropping five places, while Dhawan occupied the 33rd spot. Rohit was ranked 44th after tumbling three places.

There was no change in the allrounders’ rankings, which is still headed by Shakib Al Hasan, with Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin in second and third place respectively.
